Classroom Expectations/Procedures

  • Be positive–attitude is a powerful tool
  • Be productive–use class time effectively, listen, and follow directions
  • Be polite–raise your hand, refrain from talking at inappropriate times, stay in your seat, etc.
  • Be prepared–come to class with necessary supplies and completed assignments
  • Be respectful–always be kind to others

It is essential to the success of the teacher and the students that the classroom be a safe and calm place. Good teaching involves good discipline which includes controlling undesirable behavior, encouraging good behavior, ad maintaining healthy relationships with students. I will be using 1-2-3 Magic for Teachers* which is a simple, effective way of managing-gently and firmly-the behavior of children. The idea behind 1-2-3 is that it uses a “teacher-in-charge” strategy, with no arguing, yelling, or negative physical contact.

A major challenge that students present to their teachers is doing something we want them to Stop. Stop behaviors include frequent, minor, everyday challenges children present, such as whining, disrespect, talking out of turn, arguing, teasing, pouting, yelling, and getting out of one’s seat.

For Stop behavior challenges I will use the 1-2-3 or “counting” procedure. Here is how it works: If a student is acting inappropriately, I will hold up one finger and say, “That’s one.” If the student continues, I will hold up two fingers and say, “That’s two.” If it continues, I will say, “That’s three. Go to time out and complete the assignment you are given.” That means that the student has a time out to think about his/her behavior. Once the time out is served, the matter is over, and generally will not be mentioned again. If needed, I will use time-out alternatives.
